2012 Legends Reserve Merlot
Nose: Aromas of blackberry and sweet spice from the barrel. Flavour: Bold fruit. A luscious wine with smooth tannin and a long finish.
2012 Merlot Reserve, Silver Medal National Wine Awards
A cassis syrup-blueberry-ribeena-scented version of merlot, clearly very ripe and verging into the oxidative spectrum, like a wild southern Roussillon example of carignan or syrah, and all the better for it (even if not typical Niagara merlot. Wild herbs and sage drive up the complexity. The palate is fullish and plump, juicy and balanced, with soft but abundant tannins, balanced acids and alcohol. Good length. This is pleasurable wine. Tasted June 2014. (88) John Szabo, MS

Legends Estates ‘Reserve – Lizak Vineyard’ Merlot 2012
VQA Lincoln Lakeshore $21.95 14.0% alcohol
Baking spice, pipe tobacco and exotic incense aromas set the table for a smorgasbord of palate flavours with black currant, ripe mulberry and cassis to the fore. Its medium-plus weight with generous mouthfeel, good depth and the persistent finish is adorned with sweet ripe berry fruit and black plum. This deserves a fine cut of red meat grilled rare and well-seasoned. It’s terrific value and was tough to spit. Aerate/decant for a couple of hours before pouring. (Vic Harradine)
